RVs are meant to go on long road trips, which means consuming a fair amount of gas. Budget-minded folks will want to do what they can to improve their gas mileage so they can cut down on fuel costs. We’ve rounded up our favorite tips for making the most of each fill-up below.
Keep to Lower Speeds
How you drive your camper will play a role in how quickly you guzzle up gas. It’s not surprising, but going fast will consume a disproportionate amount of fuel. This becomes especially true once you go past about 55 miles per hour. Try to keep at a lower speed, which is also safer anyway!
Maintain Your Speed
Another strategy is to try to maintain your speed. The cycle of speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, slowing down will hurt your fuel efficiency. It’s also best to limit hard acceleration after a full stop. When you press down on the gas pedal too hard, it hurts your fuel economy.
Limit Idling
Finally, try to avoid idling as much as possible. When you sit and idle, you are just wasting gas without the benefit of going anywhere! If you have to make a long stop, turn your engine off. You can also try to avoid driving in rush-hour traffic, which is a peak time for idling.
